Healing Eating Disorders by Changing Behavior
and Strengthening Relationships
Over more than twenty years of treating eating disorders, I have seen it proven again and again that mutual respect, empathy, and trust are the cornerstones of healthy relationships, repair of damaged relationships, and recovery from eating disorders. There are many factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder, and treating individuals therefore requires understanding of the psychiatric, psychological, and relational underpinnings, as well as addressing symptoms.
Educating the mental health, health care, and educational communities, other professional communities, and the general public on eating disorders is my primary focus. Current workshop, seminar, and lecture opportunities are available on this website.
Cedar Associates Foundation, Inc.
I am the Founder and former Executive Director of CEDAR Associates, a private outpatient program in Westchester County, NY specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, other self-harming behaviors, and the problems that often accompany them, such as depression, anxiety, relational issues, sexual and physical trauma, and body image issues.
I am also the President of Cedar Associates Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to education and research about eating disorders, with the ultimate goal of prevention.
When Food is Family
I have also authored a book – When Food is Family: A loving approach to heal eating disorders (Idyll Arbor, Inc. 2011). The book offers the first ever step-by-step program that teaches families and sufferers the skills they need to communicate and re-connect with each other throughout the recovery process. When Food is Family explores the metaphoric voice and the role the eating disorder plays in the family. Patients and families also learn exercises, provided throughout the book, that teach them to deal with issues and obstacles that emerge around food and other eating disorder symptoms.
I maintain an international and national blog on eating disorders for the magazine Psychology Today and have written for national and local journals and publications including Addiction Professional Magazine. You may also read my blog on this website.
